Capitol Hill Light Rail

Ari at Ari Takes Pictures has photos of the demolition work that has started for the Capitol Hill light rail station. The station will be underground, but they need to demolish everything on the surface so they can start construction. It’s a couple of old houses and apartments one block east of Broadway, at John.

Update: a look at the parcels where construction will be happening. Red areas will be the surface entrances to the station, blue will be available for development after the project is completed.

That is a great video you have there of the demo work! Do we know yet what is going to go up over the station?

I don’t know. The project concept drawings show these imposing three-story brick walls rising up around the stations. I’m guessing that’s just architect-speak for “To Be Determined”.

I don’t know, though, it they’re going to want to keep the land above the station open, like a public plaza, or if they’re going to allow construction on top of the station.

They’re holding public meetings to flesh out what the community wants done with the land above the station. It sounds like people are in favor of retail, with some open public spaces, and possibly a farmer’s market. Everyone seems to agree that you want to build something that will attract people on foot, which will then encourage them to ride the train.
